During Napoleon's invasion of Russia, within six months a million lives were lost, the largest army yet assembled destroyed, and the Emperor transformed from the master of a continent, to a fugitive fleeing for his life. This work is an account of the catastrophe by General Count de Segur. It covers the Grand Army's first steps onto Russian soil in the midst of a raging storm, to its miraculous escape at the River Berezina in the grip of a bitter winter and pursued by three separate Russian armies.
