"For the first time he looked directly at me1 and the snarl on his face would have bared fangs if he’d been a vamp. As it was, it told me I had another enemy to worry about. His gaze flicked over me like a whip, and he didn’t seem to like what he saw. I'm back to the beginning, right after reading the last book and novellas and I get so engrossed with every interaction of this characters I already love or dislike. How to describe the feeling when I first read this book? I can't. I honestly wasn't expecting much of it, when I randomly pick it up to improve my english reading comprehension. But, what did I get? An honest love and almost addiction to Karen Chance creations. The characters are not what I expected, nor is the development. I get constantly surprised and that's a first. This book was the one to open up the Urban Fantasy sub-genre word to me along side Anita Blake's and Southern Vampires. And I haven't felt any regret over it whatsoever. At first is descriptive. To much to some, but to me, It only layed out the field to comprehend better the What's, Whom, and How's of this new world. The full-packed action was an add-on very well cemented and expected in the whole of the series and this one started it. The heroine? She was totally not expected! At all! I expected someone more...badass, like the ones I've know until that point. But, no. Cassie is ass-kicking in a hole different way. Sassy, feisty, gutsy and a bit of a scaredy-cat as well. She's someone to either love or hate. And I love her. Because she's not perfect, and because she's scared, but she'll lift the hem of her tattered dress and run to danger to save people that wants to kill her...Only because that's the right thing to do, and nobody alse seems to do any better. And the partners she gets...Well, they're not perfect either. A particular rough, caffeinated-hummingbird-impatient, socially skilled as a wet cat, and overall badass war mage, is my favourite sidekick. All of him; even his bad beginning. Well, this is the nothing humble opinion of a bookworm about a lucky finding. And I hope you will see this book and the rest of Karen Chance's books, a lucky finding too."
