Khaled Hosseini (Kabul, 4 de marzo de 1965) es considerado el escritor afgano más leído de la historia, con más de 38 millones de ejemplares vendidos de sus novelas en todo el mundo. Tras exiliarse en Estados Unidos en 1980 a raíz de la invasión soviética, se formó como médico y comenzó a escribir mientras ejercía la medicina. Su debut literario, Cometas en el cielo (2003), fue un fenómeno global y fue seguido por Mil soles espléndidos (2007), Y las montañas hablaron (2013) y Súplica a la mar (2018). Sus obras, traducidas a decenas de idiomas, han acercado la historia y la cultura de Afganistán a lectores de todo el mundo.

Hosseini ha sido distinguido con numerosos premios, entre ellos el Borders Original Voices Award, el British Book Award a la mejor lectura del año, el Book Sense Book of the Year Award, la Medalla Nichols-Chancellor, el Golden Plate Award de la American Academy of Achievement y el John Steinbeck Award. En 2006 fue nombrado Embajador de Buena Voluntad del ACNUR y en 2007 fundó la Khaled Hosseini Foundation, dedicada a la ayuda humanitaria en Afganistán. Reside en el norte de California, donde continúa su labor literaria y humanitaria.
