While such texts exist for language students of French, German, and Spanish, there appears to be a dearth of esthetic and historical reviews in English of the civilization that was the mother of these others. The publication of this manual, which, as the French could say, is comparable to their editions of, 'les étapes de civilization, ' should go far in helping many who do not read Italian develop a keener sense of the Italian spirit which continues to inspire so many talented people both today as well as in times past.
