Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airways of the lungs. It causes recurring reversible airflow obstruction, and triggers bronchospasms. Chest tightness, wheezing, shortness of breath and coughing are typical of asthmatic episodes. The diagnosis of asthma is based on the symptoms, spirometry and response to therapy over time. There is no cure for the condition. However, symptoms can largely be prevented by understanding and avoiding potential triggers, such as allergens and irritants. Inhaling corticosteroids, and intake of antileukotriene agents and long-acting beta agonists are effective for controlling asthma symptoms. In severe cases, hospitalization, or the use of intravenous corticosteroids and magnesium sulfate may be required. This book unravels the recent studies on asthma.
