Así, mientras esbozaba lo que sería el Diario de Greg, trabajó como diseñador en un periódico y como programador informático. Después de seis años de trabajo, se publicó en Funbrain.com. Hasta la fecha, la versión online del Diary of a Wimpy Kid tiene más de 80 millones de visitas. En 2006 se empezaron a publicar las historias de Greg en formato libro y rápidamente se colocaron en los primeros puestos de las listas de ventas.
