In this definitive new en face German-English edition, Wittgenstein experts Peter Hacker and Joachim Schulte have incorporated significant editorial changes to earlier editions of Philosophical Investigations in order to reflect more closely Wittgenstein's original intentions. Notable revisions include the placement of Wittgenstein's notes - Randbemerkungen - into their designated positions in the text, some corrections to the originally published German text, and the numbering of all the remarks in what was called Part 2 and is now named Philosophy of Psychology - A Fragment. Extensive modifications and corrections have also been made to G. E. M. Anscombe's original English translation. Detailed editorial endnotes have been added to illuminate difficult translation decisions and to identify references and allusions in Wittgenstein's original text.

Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) fue un influyente filósofo austríaco, considerado una de las figuras más destacadas del pensamiento del siglo XX. Nació en Viena en el seno de una familia acomodada e intelectual. Estudió ingeniería en Berlín y luego en la Universidad de Cambridge, donde conoció al filósofo Bertrand Russell, quien lo introdujo al mundo de la filosofía lógica.

Su primera obra importante, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921), busca establecer los límites del lenguaje y del pensamiento, proponiendo que lo que no se puede decir con claridad debe callarse. Esta obra lo convirtió en una figura destacada del Círculo de Viena y de la filosofía analítica. Tras su publicación, se retiró temporalmente de la filosofía para trabajar como maestro rural y jardinero.

Años después, retomó su actividad filosófica con un enfoque radicalmente distinto, que quedó plasmado en su obra póstuma Investigaciones Filosóficas. Allí critica sus ideas anteriores y propone que el significado del lenguaje surge de su uso en contextos sociales, una teoría que influyó profundamente en la lingüística, la psicología y las ciencias sociales.
