He falls in love with his instructor's sister and marries her. During the Second World War, he serves as a pilot in bomber units and survives various near brushes, until he and his wife escape with his aircraft in July 1944 to neutral Turkey, due to his wife's indirect involvement with the assassination attempt on Hitler.
