Julia Donaldson nació en Londres, Inglaterra, en el año 1948. Actriz y escritora de libros infantiles, aunque también ha escrito obras de teatro. En sus inicios escribía canciones para programas infantiles de televisión, hasta que en 1993, a partir de la letra de una de sus canciones, escribió una historia para niños. Desde ese momento se ha dedicado a escribir libros. Sus libros se caracterizan por contar historias para niños utilizando las rimas. El Grúfalo, calificado por algunos como "un clásico moderno", es uno de sus libros más populares.
