Nehemiah needs a friend. Often picked on and made fun of, his Little League experience is an abysmal failure. That is, until Nick, the star player, offers encouragement during a game. So taken by Nick's attention, Nehemiah begs his new friend to teach him how to play. Under Nehemiah's relentless pleading, Nick agrees and a friendship ensues. The relationship builds into high school, Nick needing Nehemiah as much as Nehemiah needs him. In their senior year, Nick discovers a new family, one in which he is accepted as he is as long as he meets certain conditions. Nehemiah urges Nick to separate himself, stay true to who he is, but the attractions are too great and Nick succumbs to the trappings. As Nick falls deeper into his new life, Nehemiah surges into his own world, that of an attorney, a prosecutor bent on ridding the Valley of its corruption and gang activity. Nehemiah's boss readies himself for retirement, tabbing Nehemiah as his successor. In Nehemiah's pursuit of the job as the Valley's District Attorney, he is thrust into a case he does not want, a case that brings the past to the present, a case in which there are no winners, only losers.
