If at times it is obscured by tales of love and war and acts of derring-do, it still carries on, hidden but unbroken, below the surface of the narrative. The author writes with serious passion, but often catches us with snippets of humour. She challenges us to reconsider many of the ideas that we may take for granted, and never shies away from difficult questions.
