Written during the author's time as a political prisoner in the famous penitentiary of Lecumberri in Mexico, it sold thousands of copies in its first edition, becoming widely accepted as the official textbook by history faculties in Mexico despite Gilly's continued incarceration. Adolfo Gilly, escritor e historiador, ha publicado libros y ensayos sobre México y América Latina. Se naturalizó mexicano en 1982. Desde 1979 fue profesor en la División de Estudios de Posgrado de la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Fue profesor e investigador visitante en University of Chicago, Columbia University, University of Maryland, Stanford University, Yale University, New York University, y por dos veces investigador residente en el National Humanities Center, North Carolina. Colaboró asiduamente en el periódico La Jornada. En 2010 la UNAM lo nombró profesor emérito.
