A scientific investigation and personal adventure story about zombis and the voudoun culture of Haiti by a Harvard scientist. In April 1982, ethnobotanist Wade Davis arrived in Haiti to investigate two documented cases of zombis--people who had reappeared in Haitian society years after they had been officially declared dead and had been buried. Drawn into a netherworld of rituals and celebrations, Davis penetrated the vodoun mystique deeply enough to place zombification in its proper context within vodoun culture. In the course of his investigation, Davis came to realize that the story of vodoun is the history of Haiti--from the African origins of its people to the successful Haitian independence movement, down to the present day, where vodoun culture is, in effect, the government of Haiti's countryside. The Serpent and the Rainbow combines anthropological investigation with a remarkable personal adventure to illuminate and finally explain a phenomenon that has long fascinated Americans.

(Vancouver, 1953) es profesor de Antropología y ocupa la BC Leadership Chair en Culturas y Ecosistemas en Riesgo en la Universidad de Columbia Británica. Estudió en la Universidad de Harvard Antropología y Biología y recibió allí también su doctorado en Etnobotánica. Entre 1999 y 2013 fue Explorador Residente de la National Geographic Society. Es autor de más de veinte libros, entre ellos El río (1996), La serpiente y el arcoíris (1997), Sombras en el sol (1998), La selva húmeda (1998), El leopardo ensombrecido (1998) y Los guardianes de la sabiduría ancestral (2009) y en 2012 obtuvo el Premio “Samuel Johnson” por su libro Into the Silence. The Great War, Mallory, and the Conquest of Everest. Ha desarrollado también una prolífica carrera audiovisual, en la que se destaca la serie documental de ocho horas de duración Light at the Edge of the World, escrita y producida para National Geographic Society. Davis ha recibido once títulos honoríficos, así como la Medalla de Oro de la Royal Canadian Geographical Society en 2009, y por parte de la Universidad de Harvard la Medalla de los Exploradores (2011), Medalla “David Fairchild” por sus exploraciones botánicas (2012) y la Medalla Centenaria (2015). Desde 2016 es Miembro de la Orden del Canadá y en 2017 recibió la Medalla “Sir Christopher Ondaatje” a la Exploración.
