The story, set in Edwardian England, explores themes of class, social status, and morality. Comus, though born into wealth and status, spends much of his time indulging in mischief and pursuing pleasure. It is a witty and critical exploration of the superficiality of high society, the perils of overindulgence, and the absurdity of social conventions. Through his biting humor and satirical style, Saki critiques the self-satisfied characters who drift through life without ever confronting the realities of hard work or personal responsibility, highlighting the consequences of overindulgence and the emptiness of a life lived without purpose or real effort.

Saki —sinónimo de Hector Hugh Munro— nació en Akyab, Birmania, ahora Myanmar. Trabajó en Inglaterra como periodista y, a lo largo de su carrera literaria, exploró la dramaturgia y la novela, pero se especializó en el relato corto. Gracias a su ingenio, a su fina ironía y a la forma de integrar el humor negro en su producción literaria, hoy está considerado como una de las figuras clave de la literatura humorística inglesa de principios del S. XIX. Además, sus cuentos tienen admiradores de la talla de Jorge Luis Borges.

Saki se alistó en el ejército voluntariamente y participó en la Primera Guerra Mundial. El autor murió en combate en Francia, a causa del disparo de un francotirador alemán.
