Beneath the Stone: The World's Most Mysterious Sealed Temples and Tombs (en Inglés)
Reseña del libro "Beneath the Stone: The World's Most Mysterious Sealed Temples and Tombs (en Inglés)"
In November 1922, Howard Carter widened a small hole in a plastered doorway and held a candle to it. Behind it, nothing had been touched for 3,245 years. Asked what he could see, he said: wonderful things. Some places are lost. Others were closed on purpose — and someone meant them to stay closed. Beneath the Stone is about deliberate sealing. Every chapter asks the same three questions: who shut the chamber, what were they trying to keep in or out, and what happened when it was opened — or why, after centuries, it still has not been. PART I — THE CHAMBERS THAT WERE OPENED Stand at Carter's doorway, and at the one at Vergina that held a king of Macedon. Enter the library cave at Dunhuang, walled up around the year 1000 and holding forty thousand manuscripts. Walk the Serapeum at Saqqara, where twenty-four granite boxes of seventy tonnes each were sunk into the rock for bulls. See Göbekli Tepe, a temple its own builders buried. Follow the tunnel under the Feathered Serpent pyramid at Teotihuacan, sealed and resealed across four centuries. Open the tomb of Pakal at Palenque and of the Lord of Sipán, and the villa at Herculaneum whose library is still being read by machine. PART II — THE DOORS STILL CLOSED The tomb of Qin Shi Huang, surrounded by an army and unexcavated by choice. The Big Void inside the Great Pyramid, found by cosmic-ray imaging and still unentered. Vault B at Padmanabhaswamy, which the Supreme Court of India declined to open — and declined to order shut. The chambers behind Tutankhamun's north wall. The Chapel of the Tablet at Axum, which one man guards and no one else may enter. The tombs of Alexander and of Genghis Khan, both lost on purpose. WHAT MAKES THIS BOOK DIFFERENT Forty-five original maps, plans and sections, drawn for this book — including cutaways of the chambers themselves Every chapter separates what has been proved from what is still disputed — no mystery is oversold, and none is dismissed A chapter on the curses, and what the records actually say about the people who died Each chapter ends with a practical guide to visiting the site today, or an honest answer about why you cannot Fully referenced, with sources listed chapter by chapter Book Five, and the last, of the Beneath series — after Beneath the Surface, Beneath the Waves, Beneath the Sands and Jungles and Beneath the Ice.
