E. P. Thompson (1924-1993) was one of the preeminent British historians of the second half of the twentieth century; his The Making of the English Working Class (1964) is arguably the most influential work of British history published during that period. In the present work, originally presented as a set of lectures at Stanford University, Thompson returned to a question that had been on his mind since the war years, the circumstances surrounding the death of his older brother Frank as a British Liaison Officer with the Bulgarian partisans in 1944.Though these events, Thompson admitted, constituted only a historical footnote, they afforded him an opportunity to engage larger intellectual and political matters that we now associate with the early beginnings of the Cold War and to illustrate certain elements of historical method. Thompson was here concerned not so much with what is fact and what is interpretation as with "the activities of anti-historians, how sensitive evidence is destroyed or screened, how myths originate, how historical anecdote may simply be a code for ideology, how the reasons of state are eternally at war with historical knowledge."Early in 1944, a British Special Operations mission was parachuted into Serbia to make contact with a group of Bulgarian partisans operating in the area. Their aim was to arrange air drops of supplies for the partisans and to assist them in extending guerrilla warfare across the frontier into Bulgaria itself. Frank Thompson was head of the British mission when it entered Bulgaria with the partisan forces. By the end of May, the entire group had been killed or captured. After a show trial, Frank (though a British officer in uniform) was executed by a firing squad together with the remaining leaders of the partisans and the villagers who had aided them.The book shows how the status of the actors in this drama―and the respect accorded to them in the decades that followed―varied with changes in the political climate of Europe and the world. It does not simply examine the events themselves, although these are clarified, but also analyzes the politics that lay behind the events, notably the conflicting interests of the "western" and "eastern" allies in supporting the partisans and the British liaison mission.

Influyó decisivamente en el pensamiento marxista británico, separándolo del europeo y dándole carácter propio, dentro de lo que se conoce como socialismo humanista. Nacido en Oxford de padres misioneros metodistas. Luchó en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en una compañía de tanques en Italia. Estudió en el Corpus Christi College de Cambridge. Comprometido políticamente con la izquierda y el pacifismo, en 1946 forma el Grupo de Historiadores del Partido Comunista o Grupo de Cambridge, con Christopher Hill, Eric Hobsbawn, Rodney Hilton, Dona Torr y otros. En 1948 se casa con Dorothy Towers, también historiadora de la misma tendencia. El grupo se articulará en torno a la revista Past and Present desde 1952, y sobrevivirá a su abandono del Partido Comunista (1956, a raíz de la invasión soviética de Hungría). Juega un papel clave en los comienzos de la corriente conocida como Nueva Izquierda (New Left) a finales de los años 1950. Se significó por su postura crítica desde la izquierda frente a los gobiernos laboristas de 1964-1970 y 1974-1979. Durante los años 1980 lideró el movimiento de intelectuales contra las armas nucleares en Europa. Intervino en la apertura del diálogo entre el movimiento pacifista de Europa occidental y los disidentes de la Europa del Este dominada por la Unión Soviética, por lo que desde ésta se le acusó de actuar al servicio del imperialismo estadounidense. Profesor en distintas universidades de Inglaterra y Estados Unidos, fue sonoro su abandono de la Universidad de Warwick en protesta por su comercialización (que cuenta en su libro Warwick University Limited, 1971). Ataca al marxismo estructuralista de Louis Althusser y sus seguidores británicos de la New Left Review (revista y corriente de la que Thompson se había alejado a partir del segundo periodo de ésta, que incluía elementos cercanos al trotskismo). Este episodio provocó un jugoso debate historiográfico, con aportaciones cruzadas entre él mismo (Pobreza de la Teoría, 1978) y New Left, con Perry Anderson a la cabeza (Discusiones/argumentos dentro del marxismo inglés, jugando con la palabra Arguments). Su producción historiográfica se centra en la historia social, sobre todo en el movimiento obrero de la Inglaterra de la Revolución industrial. Prolífico ensayista y articulista, también publicó influyentes biografías de William Morris y William Blake. Su obra esencial es La formación de la clase obrera en Inglaterra (1963), donde revisa la interpretación marxista tradicional desde un materialismo histórico no dogmático.
