English summary: The prophet Jeremiah is unique in that he is endowed by God with responsibility for "the nations and the kingdoms". This universal mission reflects a new understanding of God and illustrates, at the same time, a changed understanding of the role of prophecy in the Old Testament. We know much more about Jeremiah's life than about the life of any other prophet. It is above all a life of suffering which culminates outwardly in persecution and mortal danger. Even worse is the inner loneliness of the prophet and his pain about the rejection of God by the people. But the Book of Jeremiah is also a witness to a new salvation which blossoms amidst doom. German description: Der Prophet Jeremia ist insofern einzigartig, als er von Gott Verantwortung fur Volker und Konigreiche ubertragen bekommt. Diese universale Sendung spiegelt ein neues Verstandnis Gottes wider und verdeutlicht damit zugleich ein verandertes Rollenverstandnis fur Prophetie im Alten Testament. Das Jeremiabuch fasst dabei Aspekte fruherer grosser Gestalten wie Mose, Amos, Hosea, Micha usw. in der Person des Propheten Jeremia zusammen. Von seinem Leben erfahren wir so viel wie sonst von keinem der Propheten. Es ist vor allem ein Leidensweg, der ausserlich in Verfolgung und Todesgefahr gipfelt. Aber schlimmer noch sind die Einsamkeit des Propheten und der Schmerz uber die Zuruckweisung Gottes durch das Volk, die Jeremia innerlich zerreissen. Das nach ihm benannte Buch gibt aber auch Zeugnis von neuem Heil, das mitten aus dem Untergang aufbluht. Das wird gleich in der ersten Vision angedeutet, in der ein Mandelzweig Gottes Wachsamkeit uber seinem Wort symbolisiert.
