S/ 67,35They all agreed the keeper was a glitch. Not one of them had gone out to ask it why it kept the light.
A warm, hopeful cozy science fiction novella for grown-ups, perfect for readers who love a low-stakes, big-heart comfort read with a found-family crew, a lonesome frontier setting, and machines worth keeping.
Far out past the dead end of the trade lanes stands the loneliest light on the Scatter. Lampwick, the first-generation keeper that has tended this beacon alone for longer than anyone alive, goes on faithfully lighting the dark for ships that stopped coming years ago. Now its power core is failing, and a remote sector authority has read the old keeper off a safety case as a glitch: switch it off, clear the risk, and let the dead sector go dark before something goes wrong.
Robot wrangler Roy and the crew of the barge The Marigold will not have it. Where others reboot, wipe, or scrap, Roy listens, and a machine that has kept a light for a lifetime, he knows, does not keep it for nothing.
So Roy declines the shutdown and does the harder thing. He goes out aboard the silent station and reads the lonely keeper the way he reads any holdout that has dug in, and what he begins to find is not a fault but a being keeping faith with something the empty sky forgot. The crew’s good hearts make it worse first, when a headlong attempt to simply mend the failing core frightens the keeper into shutting them out and brings the authority’s clock down faster, and Roy must slow everyone right down, because a thing that is broken and a thing that is simply, faithfully, unseen are not the same thing at all.
If you love the gentle, hopeful futures of Becky Chambers, the cozy found-family warmth of Travis Baldree, or the tender humour of T.J. Klune, pull up a chair by the warm. This is comfort reading for adults: cozy sci-fi with a lonely-lamp heart, low on peril, high on heart, with no on-page violence and no one thrown away.
Every Robot Wrangler Roy book is a complete standalone wrangle. Read them in any order. Put the kettle on. You will be looked after in here.
