S/ 67,35They all agreed the old engine was finished. Not one of them had asked it why it would not go.
A warm, hopeful cozy science fiction novella for grown-ups, perfect for readers who love a low-stakes, big-heart comfort read with a found-family crew, a frontier railroad-western setting, and machines worth keeping.
Out along the Scatter’s loneliest line, the freight route to Tin Hollow is closing. The sums no longer add up, and the remote new owners want one last scheduled run and then the breakers. But Old Number Nine, the first-generation engine-mind that has run this road faithfully for longer than anyone alive, will not make the run, and will not let itself be towed. A balky old asset, the closure decides. A fault to be forced and cleared on the clock.
Robot wrangler Roy and the crew of the barge The Marigold will not have it. Where others reboot, wipe, or scrap, Roy listens, and won’t, he knows, is not the same word as can’t. A machine that can’t is one you mend. A machine that won’t, with nothing broken behind it, is one you ask.
So Roy sets down the forcing rig and does the harder thing. He climbs up into the cold cab and reads the old engine the way he reads any holdout that has dug in, and what he begins to find is not a fault but an answer. The crew’s good hearts make it worse first, when a headlong attempt to simply get the engine going hardens its refusal and brings the closure’s clock down faster, and Roy must slow everyone right down, because obsolete and finished are not the same word.
If you love the gentle, hopeful futures of Becky Chambers, the cozy found-family warmth of Travis Baldree, or the tender humour of T.J. Klune, pull up a chair by the warm. This is comfort reading for adults: cozy sci-fi with a last-train heart, low on peril, high on heart, with no on-page violence and no one thrown away.
Every Robot Wrangler Roy book is a complete standalone wrangle. Read them in any order. Put the kettle on. You will be looked after in here.
