S/ 90,60The history of modernity is often told as a story of separation. According to one influential narrative, the advance of science, the triumph of rational inquiry, and the emergence of secular political institutions gradually displaced the authority of religion from the center of Western life. The Enlightenment, in this account, inaugurated a new age in which reason replaced revelation, criticism superseded tradition, and the human mind increasingly sought explanations of the world without recourse to the sacred. Religion survived, but its cultural prominence appeared diminished. It became, for many thinkers, a private matter rather than a comprehensive framework for understanding reality.
Yet this narrative, while not entirely false, is incomplete. The period that followed the Enlightenment did not simply witness the decline of religion. It also produced one of the most profound religious transformations in modern history. Across Europe and beyond, poets, philosophers, theologians, artists, musicians, and social critics began to rediscover dimensions of religious life that they believed had been neglected by the rationalistic spirit of the age. They did not necessarily call for a return to older forms of authority, nor did they seek merely to defend inherited doctrines against modern criticism. Instead, they sought new ways of understanding the sacred, new languages for speaking about transcendence, and new forms of spiritual experience capable of addressing the anxieties and aspirations of modern humanity. This movement, known as Romanticism, became one of the most creative and influential forces in the reconfiguration of religion in the modern world.
