Reseña del libro "Securing China. Worlding Security Studies (en Inglés)"

Securing China demonstrates how Xi Jinping’s national security agenda has transformed the governance of China^—^a process with global implications. By placing contemporary national security policy in a historical and global context, the book demonstrates that there is no universal concept of security.

When President Xi Jinping took over the leadership of China, he spearheaded a policy shift placing national security at the heart of the political project. This process has led to an unprecedented expansion of the security agenda, a strengthened and centralised security apparatus, and a series of new laws codifying Xi's own 'total national security' concept. Security policy now takes in a seemingly limitless number of issues, from more traditional military concerns to economic, ecological, cyber, and cultural security. It filters into all areas of and levels of policy, transforming China's international relations, domestic policy, and everyday life. Securing China argues that total national security represents a paradigm shift in the governance of China, a move with global ramifications. The book places this shift in historical and international context and traces how it shapes contemporary policy across three areas: territorial security, counterterrorism, and cultural security. In the process it draws out five core characteristics at the heart of Xi's security concept and sets out where these have similarities and/or differences with concepts found elsewhere.

Building on postcolonial theory, Securing China uses a detailed and empirically grounded analysis of contemporary security politics in the PRC to develop an agenda for Worlding Security Studies that transcends the Eurocentrism at the heart of International Security Studies. It does so through a double move that challenges two binaries that structure the field: similar/different, and local/global. In contrast to conventional security studies, it argues that there is no universal concept of security, but rather a series of concepts that have both similarities and/or differences that shape policy around the world. Rather than isolating China, Worlding Security Studies pays attention to hybridity and postcolonial learning, understanding China not as an 'external Other' but as a state that shapes and is shaped by other states. The book therefore reimagines the theory and practice of security through an original study of China.

By bringing together a detailed state-of-the-art analysis of contemporary Chinese security politics with a far-reaching agenda for the global study of security, Securing China offers a vital retelling of how Xi Jinping's leadership is transforming China and its place in the world.

ABOUT THE SERIES: Voices in International Relations, published under the auspices of the European International Studies Association (EISA), furthers the development of research at the frontiers of International Relations (IR). It expands the remit of the field by including innovative scholarship that broadens key debates in the discipline, but it is more interested in reconfiguring such debates by approaching them from inside and outside the conventional core. Thematically, we aim to publish research that pushes the limits of IR conventionally defined from within and connects it to debates developing outside the discipline. We are committed to furthering diversity and inclusion in terms of authorship, location, topics and approaches from both inside and outside Europe. We have an inclusive approach to neighbouring disciplines, be it sociology, history, anthropology, geography, economics, political theory or law.

Series editors: Debbie Lisle, Tanja Aalberts, Anna Leander, and Laura Sjoberg.
