Winds whistled up the river, and winds whistled down from the hills, and they met to swirl and gather fury and rattle the city's millions of windowpanes. Johnston McCulley (1883-1958) fue un escritor estadounidense conocido por sus obras de literatura de aventuras y ficción pulp. Su creación más famosa es El Zorro, un justiciero enmascarado que apareció por primera vez en La maldición de Capistrano (1919), publicada en la revista All-Story Weekly. Debido a su éxito, la historia fue recopilada y publicada como novela en 1924 con el título El Zorro.

McCulley escribió numerosas secuelas del personaje, consolidando su legado en la literatura y el cine. Además de las historias de El Zorro, exploró otros géneros, como el crimen y la aventura, escribiendo para revistas pulp.
