Reseña del libro "The History of France: Revolution, Empire, and the Making of a Modern Republic, 1789–Present (The Past That Built the Present) (en Inglés)"

France has torn up its own rulebook more often than any other country in Europe: two empires, three monarchies, five republics, one wartime regime nobody wants to count, and roughly fifteen constitutions in 237 years. That is usually told as a joke about French instability. It is the wrong place to start. Look instead at who collects the tax, who appoints the man in charge of a department, who signs the paperwork when you buy a house. You find a machine built between 1789 and 1804 that every later regime — royalist, imperial, republican, and Vichy — quietly kept. The kings came back in 1814 and kept the prefects. Vichy kept the whole apparatus, which is exactly what made it so efficient at what it did. Inside, you'll find: The Revolution counted, not mythologised — seven prisoners in the Bastille and 250 barrels of powder, 16,594 documented death sentences, and a Vendée toll historians still put anywhere between 117,000 and 450,000. Napoleon's machine taken apart — the corps system, the supply arithmetic that worked in Germany and failed in Russia, and 450,000 men across the Niemen against 120,000 coming back. Two wars, honestly — Verdun's casualty figures as two armies counted them differently, and why the Maginot Line worked exactly as designed while the front broke beside it. The modern republic — Dien Bien Phu, an Algerian civilian toll disputed between 400,000 and 1.5 million, and 58 nuclear reactors built in twenty years. No background in French history is assumed. The republics kept falling. The state never did.
