When author Linda Ridley is given a large damaged Shirley Temple Look-Alike doll, she wonders how a doll that once had been a playmate to a young girl in the 1930's or 1940's came to such a sad state. Surely she was loved and cherished by her owner at one time. The Journey of Rosalyn, a Shirley Temple Look-Alike: A Rescued Doll Story is a historical reimagining of this doll's unique experiences. Made in New York City during the 1930's, Rosalyn is shipped to the famous Marshall Field's store in Chicago. She spends over a year waiting for someone to purchase her only to be tossed aside by her wealthy, spoiled, new little owner. Eventually Rosalyn is given to the Salvation Army and is purchased as a surprise gift for Rosie, a young Holocaust survivor who is new to America. Rosie lovingly cares for Rosalyn but after Rosie dies, Rosalyn is neglected and becomes damaged. Linda's sister, Sue, finds Rosalyn at the Route 127 garage sales and Linda is able to lovingly rescue and restore Rosalyn to her former beauty. This touching picture book delicately reminds children and adults alike of the restorative power of love.
