Some two thousand people who had lived on the islands of Chagos for generations, many the direct descendants of enslaved people brought there from Mozambique and Madagascar in the 18th century by the French and British, were deported overnight from their island paradise as the result of a secret decision by the British government to provide the United States with land to construct a military base in the Indian Ocean. For four decades the government of Mauritius fought for the return of Chagos. Philippe Sands (Londres, 1960) es escritor, abogado y profesor de Derecho Internacional en el University College de Londres. Ha intervenido en destacados juicios internacionales celebrados en el Tribunal de Justicia de la Unión Europea, la Corte Internacional de Justicia, la Corte Penal Internacional y el Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos. Entre los casos en los que ha participado destacan el juicio al dictador chileno Augusto Pinochet, los crímenes de guerra en Yugoslavia, el genocidio de Ruanda, la invasión de Irak, las torturas de la prisión de Guantánamo y las disputas en torno al archipiélago de Chagos, entre otros. Es autor de los ensayos Lawless World, sobre la ilegalidad de la guerra de Irak, y Torture Team, sobre el uso de la tortura por parte de la administración Bush.
