Lyman Frank Baum (1856–1919), más conocido como L. Frank Baum, fue un escritor estadounidense célebre por crear el universo fantástico de El maravilloso mago de Oz. Aunque no fue autor de cómics en el sentido moderno, su obra ha inspirado innumerables adaptaciones en historietas, cine y otros medios. Baum comenzó su carrera en el periodismo y el teatro, pero alcanzó el éxito literario con la publicación de The Wonderful Wizard of Oz en 1900.

Este libro, ilustrado por W. W. Denslow, se convirtió rápidamente en un clásico de la literatura infantil. La historia de Dorothy y sus aventuras en la tierra de Oz dio lugar a una serie de más de una docena de libros escritos por Baum, en los que expandió ese mundo mágico con nuevos personajes y escenarios.
