Algernon Henry Blackwood (14 de marzo de 1869-10 de diciembre de 1951) nació en el seno de una estricta familia victoriana, fue el tercero de cinco hijos. Estudió en el Wellington College pero con el tiempo sus resultados académicos fueron empeorando hasta que, por azares de la vida, su familia se traslada a Alemania y comienza su educación en la Hermandad Morava en Konigsfeld, Selva Negra.

Posteriormente, se trasladaría a Estados Unidos donde desempeñó diferentes oficios: barman, editor, periodista en New York Times, secretario particular, empresario, granjero y profesor de violín. De vuelta a su Inglaterra natal comienza a escribir relatos de terror con gran éxito.

A partir de entonces se convertiría en escritor de relatos fantásticos, periodista y locutor de radio. Narró sus propios escritos en radio y televisión y escribió una autobiografía de sus primeros años. Su escrito, Los Sauces, es considerado uno de los mejores cuentos de terror de la historia. Fue una de las principales influencias de H.P. Lovecraft, quien lo definió como «maestro absoluto e incuestionable de la atmósfera espectral».
