Thoreau's Nature: Ethics, Politics, and the Wild explores how Thoreau crafted a life open to 'the Wild,' a term that marks the startling element of foreignness in every object of experience, however familiar. Thoreau's encounters with nature, Bennett argues, allowed him to resist his all-too-human tendency toward intellectual laziness, social conformity, and political complacency. Bennett pursues this theme by constructing a series of dialogues between Thoreau and our contemporaries: Foucault on identity and power, Haraway on the nature/culture of division, Hollywood celebrities on the Walden Woods Project, the National Endowment for the Humanities on politics and art, and Kafka on the question of political idealism. The pertinence to the late 20th century of Thoreau's pursuit of independent judgment, ecological foresight, and moral nobility becomes apparent through these engagements.

Jane Bennett es una filósofa política y teórica estadounidense reconocida por sus aportes a la teoría política contemporánea, los estudios ambientales y el denominado “nuevo materialismo”. Es profesora emérita de ciencia política en Johns Hopkins University y ha desarrollado una influyente línea de investigación sobre la relación entre los seres humanos, la materia y el mundo natural.

Su trabajo cuestiona la idea tradicional de que solo las personas poseen capacidad de acción significativa. Bennett propone que los objetos, materiales y fuerzas naturales también ejercen una forma de influencia en los acontecimientos humanos. Esta perspectiva quedó especialmente plasmada en su obra más conocida, Vibrant Matter (2010), donde introduce el concepto de “materia vibrante”, según el cual los elementos materiales participan activamente en la configuración de la realidad social y ecológica.

Además de Vibrant Matter, ha publicado libros como The Enchantment of Modern Life e Influx and Efflux. Sus ideas han influido en campos como la filosofía, la ecología, los estudios culturales, la geografía humana y las humanidades ambientales.
