Two simple reasons account for the initial impulse to undertake this collection of essays to mark the centenary of the encounter of the Tiv people with the Catholic faith. Firstly, to put what little is known of the history and enormous sacrifices of the early missionaries and their collaborators on record before an entire generation is gone, rendering the recollection of this history hazier, and the task of filling many historical gaps becomes impossible. The second reason is to call to mind how the Church as an institution in Tivland has fared in personnel management practices and the welfare of its lay staff, wondering if the Church can be "the light of the world" to our governments in this regard.
