Louise Summers is a ghostwriter and biographer. She is commissioned to ghostwrite the autobiography of tortured film star David Gale. Simultaneously, she is also writing a serious biography of Andrew Pax, a young Cambridge graduate, communist and member of the Apostles, executed in 1941 for passing secrets to the Russians. In a weird twist of circumstance, David Gale plays the lead role in a film, "Broken Light", about the executed Apostle; the last role he plays before committing suicide. Louise searches for the truth behind these two very different, but connected characters. Along the way her efforts are hampered by Clifford Deem, the officer who interrogated Pax and sent him to his death, as well as the film company that produced "Broken Light", which is determined to keep control of the media's - and consequently the public's - perception of the two figures.
